Frequently Asked Questions

Parents often have questions about emotional development, behaviour, and how to support their children effectively.
Here are some common questions that may help guide you.

1. What exactly does emotional regulation mean? Emotional regulation refers to a child’s ability to understand, manage, and respond to their emotions in a healthy way. It involves recognising feelings, calming the body when emotions become intense, and choosing appropriate responses. Watch a short explanation here: https://youtu.be/iDp5DQ0vuEI

2. How do I know if my child needs support with emotions or behaviour? If your child experiences frequent emotional outbursts, difficulty managing anger or anxiety, withdrawal, or behaviour changes that impact school, friendships, or home life, additional support can be helpful. Early support can prevent challenges from becoming bigger over time.

3. Is my child misbehaving, or are they struggling emotionally? Behaviour is often a form of communication. Some behaviours are emotionally driven—where emotions like anger or frustration feel overwhelming and children lack the skills or language to express them. Other behaviours are cognitively driven—where the child understands expectations but still chooses inappropriate behaviour. One needs soothing, the other needs improving. Understanding the emotional need behind behaviour is key to creating lasting change. These ideas are explored further in the workshop Empowered Parenting: Supporting Your Child Through Challenging Behaviours.

4. Where do my child’s feelings come from, and why do they sometimes seem so big? Children’s emotions are influenced by many factors, including developmental stage, environment, relationships, and their growing ability to understand and communicate feelings. Watch the explanation here: https://youtu.be/RvCOp1zRPNE

5. How can I help my child manage big emotions like anger or anxiety? Children benefit from learning simple, practical strategies such as naming emotions, calming the body, and practising problem-solving. Using the Feel, Reveal and Deal approach helps adults guide children through emotions step by step so they feel capable and supported rather than overwhelmed.

6. How long does it take to see changes in behaviour? Change is a process, and different strategies may be needed to discover what works best for each child. Some families notice small changes quickly, while others see gradual improvements as skills are practised and reinforced. The goal is sustainable, long-term growth rather than quick fixes.

7. Can these strategies help with school behaviour and learning? Yes. Emotional awareness and regulation support improved behaviour, focus, and learning. When children understand their emotions, they are better able to participate in learning, build relationships, and manage challenges.

8. What age groups do you work with? With decades of experience working with children and young people, Maggie focuses on supporting the adults around them. She provides guidance, strategies, and tools for parents and teachers working with children and young people, from the primary years through adolescence.

9. How do I get started? The best place to start is by attending a workshop. These sessions provide practical strategies you can begin using immediately with your child. You can also download the parenting resource PDF for additional tools and ideas.
